Remote control cars are amazing pieces of engineering, often designed by fully qualified engineers. They are designed to all levels of ability and like all things it’s better not to start right at the top because you are wasting your time and money and getting frustrated. You don’t have to start at the bottom either. Find a level which suits you.

When you buy a car you generally get everything you need in the box, a controller, a battery, a charger and of course a car. If its nitro you get everything except the fuel. They come in all shapes and sizes and vary for the terrain they are aiming for too.

There are a bunch of different types of RC cars on the market to choose from. Each of these options offers a number of pros and cons. Below, we look at five of the types that you can choose from to help you understand which would be the recommended remote control car for you.

·        Standard Remote Controlled Cars

–these are sometimes also referred to as the “streetcars”. This is the type of car you want to buy if you are going to be mainly driving your remote controlled car on flat surfaces and paved areas. If you are looking for very fast remote control cars, then this is the option for you as well.

·        Drift Remote Controlled Cars

– Next up is drift cars. These are pretty much similar to streetcars or the standard options, but a drift car will usually be equipped with a set of slick tires. These tires are great for quickly getting your car around corners and for times when you need to make a lot of turns. These are fast electric RC cars but do not have a lot of power.

·        Buggies

– a Buggy is an option that crosses the speed of on-road options, such as streetcars, with off-road options. These are very fast but also offer Off road remote control caradequate power for some tougher terrains that you may want to drive the car on. It should be noted, however, compared to some off-road options, buggies are relatively slow when going off-road. Many people who are not sure what type of car to buy tend to start out with a buggy.

·

    Truggies

– A truggy is s cross between a truck and a buggy, but focus more on providing power for off-road use than speed for road use on flat surfaces. Truggies have better tires compared to buggies, but other factors would be pretty much the same as a buggy.

·        Monster Trucks

– Finally you could opt for a monster truck. This is the option that you would choose if you prefer off-road racing and driving. Monster trucks are not built for speed on the road, but rather power on tough terrains. These are also usually durable to ensure you do not have to worry about turning them over. Trucks can also be used on grassy terrains.

There is another important factor that should be taken into account when it comes to looking at the types of cars out there – this would be the way that the car is powered. A very popular option would be electric power, but there are also many people who opt for nitro.

Fast electric RC cars are cheaper than nitro, but a nitro option would provide you with the ability to run for longer. With nitro, however, you would find yourself constantly having to buy gas for your car to continue running.

Electric or Nitro?

Having considered the above, you also need to think about whether you want and electric or nitro RC car. Nitro cars run on a special concoction of sweet smelling methanol and nitromethane. They are the best fun. Why? Well, they are noisy and powerful and you get much more of a sense of a real car from them for those reasons. Electric cars are better if you are a beginner and run much quieter.

Here are the basic differences between nitro and electric.

1; Electric remote control cars are better for beginners because they are cheaper and easier to drive.

2; Electric remote control cars come out of the box and you can use them straight away. Nitro cars take more preparation.

3; Electric remote control cars are quiet to run and so more friendly if you are using them on the street outside your house, or even down the park if its in a suburban area.

4; You can get an electric remote control car with a brushless motor which adds a lot in speed, even making your car faster than some nitro cars. But needless to say there is an added cost to this.

5; Electric remote control cars are easy to maintain and easy to clean

On the negative side:

1; Most Electric remote control cars don’t have a long battery life for each run. It varies but can be as low as 10 minutes, and if you are lucky might get up to 30 minutes.

2; Extra batteries can cost quite a bit and take up to 1 ½ hrs to charge, which means there can be lots of downtime or you spend a fortune on batteries so you always have a charged one ready to go.

3; If the car breaks down, it can be very expensive to repair and often isn’t worth it.

So how does that all compare with nitro cars?

1; Radio controlled nitro cars can be run all day and night if you want to, you just have to fill up the tank when it runs out, which should be a very quick job.

2; Radio controlled nitro cars are amazing fun to drive, have great power and make a fantastic noise.

3; Usually Radio controlled nitro cars are very fast.

4; You can fiddle with the engine to get the best out of it in a Radio controlled nitro car – but this is also a negative because it make the engine temperamental and sometimes very difficult to get running sweetly at its best.

Any other negatives?

1; They are not good for newcomers to the game, being harder to drive.

2; Radio controlled nitro cars need to be set up when you first get them, basically like running in a normal car, you have to let the engine run with no stress for some time before you can take it out and race the engine.

3; Nitro is sticky and gets everywhere and invariably get spilt or leaks on cars, making it essential to give them a good clean after which can be difficult and tedious.

A note on brushless motors.

You can buy a remote control car with a brushless motor for upwards of $250. Whats the difference to a brushed motor? There will be a lot more speed – up to 60mph as the motors are more energy efficient and longer lasting.
